Hats

A Spanish helmet dating to the 16th century. Made from plaited straw, metal and silks, it is an unusual survival.

Its shape matches that of contemporary steel helmets, but the fact it is made from straw means it would not have been used in battle. That, alongside its ornate decoration, mean it was probably used by a high-ranking official for festive peacetime occasions. Held today at the Met Museum.
